Training Tips
1. Have Patience. Remember that Rome was not built in a day. It is not possible to train a good fry cook, dishwasher, desk clerk, or porter in "one easy lesson." It is very important to repeat and do this many times.
 2. Avoid Criticism of the Old Way. It is unpleasant for anybody to hear that he has been doing a job in a wrong way. Try to use the approach, "Here is a better way." Never put anyone "on the spot."
3. Put yourself in the Learner's Place. Recognizing that learning is work is very important. Take the learner along with you a step at a time. Even things that seem to be easy to you may have taken you months to learn.
4. Speed Learning with Plenty of Praise. Don't forget that praise but not criticism, speeds learning. Encouragement is oil to the wheels of the mind. Very often supervisors give far too little praise. Always look for things to praise.
5. Set Realistic Objectives. You have to set an object that the learner can reach. Let him experience success in each step of the training road. Try to start off with easy standards. Step them up as the learner progresses.
6. Recognize Different Mental Capacities. Don't be disappointed with those employees who are not very bright. They may make the best porters, dishwashers, or maids.
7. Start with a Job Breakdown. It is important for a trainer to have a plan of teaching. This is because he it will be difficult for him without it as it can help very much.
8. Space the Training Periods. When learning is spread out, it is more effectual. A half hour a day is probably enough training for most jobs. Learning goes on in the mind between training sessions.
9. Be Positive, Encouraging, Optimistic – But Do Not Expect Miracles. The main rule is that if the employee has not learned, the trainer has not taught. Remember this.
